I finished my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/08/sunday-swoon.html">modern Green Bay Packers quilt</a> just in time for the first game of the season. Green and gold fabrics are Cotton and Steel basics; I would use them again for another Packers quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FEn_AoeyxEM/Ve4oaO1a3nI/AAAAAAAABMo/6wCIO7BPwAk/s1600/FrontOutsideMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FEn_AoeyxEM/Ve4oaO1a3nI/AAAAAAAABMo/6wCIO7BPwAk/s640/FrontOutsideMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This football quilt was one of the most challenging quilts I've ever completed! I'd put it in the modern sampler category with the different sized blocks, asymmetry and traditional blocks combined with improv blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SodnSvTHRfw/VfNORar7kBI/AAAAAAAABNI/7pnc_JtIWb8/s1600/BackingFootballBindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SodnSvTHRfw/VfNORar7kBI/AAAAAAAABNI/7pnc_JtIWb8/s640/BackingFootballBindingMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I really like the football blocks - I didn't have a pattern but I was inspired by <a href="http://cluckclucksew.com/2014/01/touchdown.html">cluck cluck sew's Touchdown pattern</a> so I just winged it. I also added one great big Swoon block, <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/08/august-dogood-stitches-block-tutorial.html">starburst blocks</a>, and letters from the Spell it with Moda tutorials which are all over the place on the internet and sort of tricky to find. The rest of the blocks are random improv or simple pinwheels, HSTs and hourglass blocks. The flying geese blocks were made with the <a href="http://www.quiltinaday.com/television/video-flyinggeeseruler.asp">Quilt in a Day ruler</a> in 4 and 8 inch blocks - this is the first time I have used the ruler following the instructions - boy did that make ALL the difference! I can't see using anything else for flying geese... I must acquire all sizes of the ruler now. Crisp points every time!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-24skbi9FPNM/VfNRyTZtUYI/AAAAAAAABNw/7tLn6BrutWc/s1600/CrossBlockMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="570" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-24skbi9FPNM/VfNRyTZtUYI/AAAAAAAABNw/7tLn6BrutWc/s640/CrossBlockMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The tiny cross block is 3 inches finished, very small pieces in that block! I went with straight line quilting every 1 1/4 inches in a gold colored Mettler thread. Since I backed the quilt in chocolate colored minky I wanted something that would't give my machine lots of trouble due to the impending deadline. I also did a scrappy binding in solid green and gold fabrics. It measures 55x57 - great size for game day<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1-MEasHloEA/VfNRxeZkDHI/AAAAAAAABNs/7k5ri2WPPWI/s1600/FullBackingBindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1-MEasHloEA/VfNRxeZkDHI/AAAAAAAABNs/7k5ri2WPPWI/s640/FullBackingBindingMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Although I truly hate to part with it I decided to donate this quilt to <a href="http://cockerrescue.net/">Shorewood Cocker Rescue</a> annual fundraiser this weekend in southern Wisconsin. The chocolate backing goes great with the footballs and also our beautiful foster Mya, who has been with us since May of this year waiting for her forever home! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SnsxNZOKwBQ/VfNU3vQImvI/AAAAAAAABOI/uDWCZE_-jx4/s1600/Mya2%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SnsxNZOKwBQ/VfNU3vQImvI/AAAAAAAABOI/uDWCZE_-jx4/s640/Mya2%255B1%255D.jpg" width="608" /></a></div>
<br />
We have a very busy weekend planned - Rescue fundraiser on Saturday, football on Sunday and today is my birthday so celebrating of course! Wine, cake and yummy food I hope! My hubby brought home an orange flower arrangement with gerbera daisies, roses, sunflowers, lilies and other things I can only identify as very pretty so we are off to a good start!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UbClVAchiZg/VfNRvyR3w3I/AAAAAAAABNk/BQ7baeCR9OI/s1600/FootballHerringboneMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UbClVAchiZg/VfNRvyR3w3I/AAAAAAAABNk/BQ7baeCR9OI/s640/FootballHerringboneMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This quilt is an adventure and most definitely one of my favorite quilts of the year!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pf5UYKdDnAk/VeOr2v2p3WI/AAAAAAAABME/FODY-eHBgrA/s1600/SwoonBlockMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="492" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pf5UYKdDnAk/VeOr2v2p3WI/AAAAAAAABME/FODY-eHBgrA/s640/SwoonBlockMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I guess you can also tell it's football time in Wisconsin!! We love our Packers!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G7WMeKBp0Ro/VeOryFohM6I/AAAAAAAABL8/4njt_mCbG28/s1600/FullFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="554" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G7WMeKBp0Ro/VeOryFohM6I/AAAAAAAABL8/4njt_mCbG28/s640/FullFrontMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have been working forever on this quilt top and finally finished it up yesterday, which felt really amazing! My initial plan was to make a quilt to donate to an upcoming fundraiser for the <a href="http://cockerrescue.net/">Cocker Spaniel Rescue</a> that my hubby and I volunteer for. Not sure where it is going to end up since the event is coming up in just a couple of weeks. I didn't plan on all of the <i>planning</i> time that would go into this quilt. Lots of math and graph paper and pondering.... Sometimes I would head down to sew and just move things around on my design wall for awhile... no sewing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XMwf4LgAP0c/VeOrw7xcjCI/AAAAAAAABLw/z_ELnG6xU5w/s1600/MyTute.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XMwf4LgAP0c/VeOrw7xcjCI/AAAAAAAABLw/z_ELnG6xU5w/s640/MyTute.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I tried to keep most of the blocks to dimensions of 3 inches. The footballs, letters and flying geese were oddballs... in other words, lots of oddballs to work around! Borders are always the answer! The block above is a <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/08/august-dogood-stitches-block-tutorial.html">6 inch starburst</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xE_54aX93Cw/VeOrxIfsyzI/AAAAAAAABL0/Z2oTaU3LCaM/s1600/BottomLeftMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="504" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xE_54aX93Cw/VeOrxIfsyzI/AAAAAAAABL0/Z2oTaU3LCaM/s640/BottomLeftMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Almost all of the fabrics are Cotton and Steel. I'm really like the metallic and little bird fabrics - although the star in the corner was really bright for the photo, jeesh! This is one of the loudest quilts I've ever made but I'm really happy with how it has turned out so far!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1uKe6OyytGA/VeOr2SnbPTI/AAAAAAAABMI/ca-mEvjFup4/s1600/StringBlocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1uKe6OyytGA/VeOr2SnbPTI/AAAAAAAABMI/ca-mEvjFup4/s640/StringBlocks.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Love the tiny string blocks on the side - great use for all of the scraps I made with this quilt. The letters are from the Spell it with Moda free tutorials. I'm planning straight line quilting and a football brown minky backing to pull it all together. It should be super warm for game days! <br />
<br />
<h2 style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-stretch: normal; margin: 0px; position: relative;">

I usually quilt up my finished tops right away. July was crazy so this one was folded up and neatly stashed away until everything calmed down a bit around here. I'm not quite ready to bid farewell to summer just yet though... then again we do have football to look forward to! This quilt was featured at <a href="http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.com/2015/08/ntt-and-other-happenings.html">My Quilt Infatuation</a> <a href="http://www.blossomheartquilts.com/2015/08/sew-cute-tuesday-57/">Blossom Heart Quilts</a> and <a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/2015/08/fabric-tuesday_24.html">Quilt Story</a>!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Wg1YutxJpQ/VctCJ6SKxsI/AAAAAAAABKc/cmyZMLmgl94/s1600/OnGroundMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Wg1YutxJpQ/VctCJ6SKxsI/AAAAAAAABKc/cmyZMLmgl94/s640/OnGroundMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a tutorial by cluck cluck sew called <a href="http://cluckclucksew.com/2013/06/finished-scrappy-summer-and-pattern.html">Scrappy Summer</a>. I have seen this pattern referred to Penny Patch as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RcNeEUjy7ug/VctCAVEs0EI/AAAAAAAABKA/60E4tAyQdVs/s1600/FluffyCloseUpMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RcNeEUjy7ug/VctCAVEs0EI/AAAAAAAABKA/60E4tAyQdVs/s640/FluffyCloseUpMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
It was a great scrap busting project and I made it a little larger than I usually make my baby quilts because these blocks were fun to do and before I knew it I had a few too many! I used a palette of orange, navy, blue, grey and mustard along with Kona White for the the four-patch blocks. I love when I don't have to buy anything new to finish a quilt! Not that I mind buying fabric!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aaNurI20CCs/VctCEvyAGSI/AAAAAAAABKY/BP0utvvDWBI/s1600/FoldedBindingFluffyMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aaNurI20CCs/VctCEvyAGSI/AAAAAAAABKY/BP0utvvDWBI/s640/FoldedBindingFluffyMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted it in a meandering pattern using a variegated light grey thread from my Tula Pink Aurifil collection. Then bound it all together with a spotty mustard and white binding. I don't always wash my quilts after they are finished but I couldn't help but want to see this one all crinkled up! The crinkle factor is one of the main reason I love to use meandering even though meandering is tricky for my brain. I love how fluffy and snuggly it turned out. The backing was just the right choice so thanks to those who shared opinions in my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/07/july-dogood-stitches.html">last post about this quilt</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qroARcEKR78/VctCLMEQSoI/AAAAAAAABKo/mkXKlI8qtug/s1600/FoldedCornerBindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qroARcEKR78/VctCLMEQSoI/AAAAAAAABKo/mkXKlI8qtug/s640/FoldedCornerBindingMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The constellation fabric above glows in the dark! I didn't have a particular little guy in mind for this quilt but I do remember my own kiddo loving glow in the dark anything! Just to be sure it worked I did take this into a closet and 'oooh and aaahh' over the glowing fabric yesterday! Plus there are monsters - sea monsters!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-90UC-HuinBc/VctCBLGMbhI/AAAAAAAABKI/Ahk_epPRhPU/s1600/BackingBindingInsideMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-90UC-HuinBc/VctCBLGMbhI/AAAAAAAABKI/Ahk_epPRhPU/s640/BackingBindingInsideMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I would absolutely use this baby quilt pattern again. My finished quilt is around 37x48 and is available in my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/243700217">etsy shop </a>for some sea creature, outer space loving little guy or little guy at heart!<br />

This summer is flying right by. July was crazy! Vacation, visitors, more visitors and a couple of custom quilt orders! It's no wonder August snuck right up! Here's a quick block tutorial that we'll be using for Promise Circle do.Good Stitches this month.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iqPWT0DolcY/VbtoxIB8WDI/AAAAAAAABHo/_Do_mB8DpCY/s1600/BlockMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iqPWT0DolcY/VbtoxIB8WDI/AAAAAAAABHo/_Do_mB8DpCY/s320/BlockMPQ.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I recently came across a similar design done with paper piecing by Amy Ellis.... I haven't quite mastered paper piecing yet so I figured out another way to make it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BgqMv_ILuYo/VbjLSH-GuaI/AAAAAAAABHQ/PT4e9-im88E/s1600/PiecesWMeasuresMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="294" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BgqMv_ILuYo/VbjLSH-GuaI/AAAAAAAABHQ/PT4e9-im88E/s320/PiecesWMeasuresMPQ.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Materials for one 6 1/2 inch unfinished star block:<br />
White background fabric<br />
4 - 1.5in x 3in rectangles<br />
Plus white scraps to complete the points<br />
<br />
Fabric for stars<br />
4 - 3 inch squares<br />
1 - 1.5 inch square<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fhgutg6bpbk/Vbtpv91VWcI/AAAAAAAABHw/PAelw2jCdzQ/s1600/DrawingMarksMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="269" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fhgutg6bpbk/Vbtpv91VWcI/AAAAAAAABHw/PAelw2jCdzQ/s320/DrawingMarksMPQ.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Take one of your 3-inch squares and measure 1 1/4 inches on both sides of a single corner. On the wrong side place a small mark at each of the 1 1/4 inch lines. Do this for each of the four 3-inch squares. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ejy-SdqYdlM/Vbtpw-y8xyI/AAAAAAAABH8/wVGaug2wzLI/s1600/MeasuringLinesMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="294" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ejy-SdqYdlM/Vbtpw-y8xyI/AAAAAAAABH8/wVGaug2wzLI/s320/MeasuringLinesMPQ.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Grab your ruler and, starting at the opposite corner of the corner with the two marks, draw a straight line to each of the marks. These will be your sew lines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lTYNq58uIxE/Vbtpwsm641I/AAAAAAAABIA/kQkPCZS9Up4/s1600/DrawnLinesMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="283" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lTYNq58uIxE/Vbtpwsm641I/AAAAAAAABIA/kQkPCZS9Up4/s320/DrawnLinesMPQ.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Grab a white scrap and place it right sides together with your marked square. Follow one of the sew lines. Before sewing you might want to take a quick peek and make sure you have enough white fabric to re-trim the square, this part can be a little tricky the first few you make.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oA6VSIvOfRk/VbzihKKalvI/AAAAAAAABIY/9F18LiCRTuU/s1600/PlacingWhiteScrap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oA6VSIvOfRk/VbzihKKalvI/AAAAAAAABIY/9F18LiCRTuU/s320/PlacingWhiteScrap.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next trim the excess off 1/4 inch from your sew line<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FstdeJy7sKQ/VbzjWxQw6MI/AAAAAAAABI4/Jjx9R79reEs/s1600/Trimming.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FstdeJy7sKQ/VbzjWxQw6MI/AAAAAAAABI4/Jjx9R79reEs/s320/Trimming.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Open and press<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ubaa6h9UgdE/VbzjUZrrbiI/AAAAAAAABIw/VAXswuiM3hY/s1600/Cutting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ubaa6h9UgdE/VbzjUZrrbiI/AAAAAAAABIw/VAXswuiM3hY/s320/Cutting.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Trim off excess white scrap so that you have a 3 inch square again<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qZaPsOx7phQ/VbzjUDJtlMI/AAAAAAAABIs/M4ONf-l1cPo/s1600/Square.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qZaPsOx7phQ/VbzjUDJtlMI/AAAAAAAABIs/M4ONf-l1cPo/s320/Square.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Do the same with your second marked sew line so that you end up with a 3 inch square with your color fabric in the center surrounded by your white background fabric. Complete this for each of the four 3-inch squares. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2cqbPvJHC-w/VbzjUhAxPUI/AAAAAAAABI0/ct2eNcpilcM/s1600/Quad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2cqbPvJHC-w/VbzjUhAxPUI/AAAAAAAABI0/ct2eNcpilcM/s320/Quad.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next assemble the star blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qwKvyxcUIwg/VbzoUA8nC4I/AAAAAAAABJM/rqG4lFJ1mNM/s1600/Placing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qwKvyxcUIwg/VbzoUA8nC4I/AAAAAAAABJM/rqG4lFJ1mNM/s320/Placing.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Trim block to 6 1/2 inches<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TWimkvAul-4/VbzqXDem6wI/AAAAAAAABJY/5hKMb5gah9I/s1600/Tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="343" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TWimkvAul-4/VbzqXDem6wI/AAAAAAAABJY/5hKMb5gah9I/s400/Tutorial.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

My groupmate <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/67667730@N05/">MsMinnesota</a> (<a href="http://wannabequilter.com/">link to her blog</a>) selected a palette rich in blues with pops of grey, green-mustard and burnt orange. Almost everyone in our group has an abundance of blue... not me, I'm all about teal but I have made an effort to select different blues to add to my stash since joining the group.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G97ApGA_1JI/VZ2fhjhe3nI/AAAAAAAABF0/bn6TmgyXezo/s1600/ColorFanMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G97ApGA_1JI/VZ2fhjhe3nI/AAAAAAAABF0/bn6TmgyXezo/s400/ColorFanMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I would not have thought to put these all together but they worked beautifully! She selected the big multicolored plus block below - another block I haven't made before. It was very easy to do and I can't wait to see what she does with it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PPl1KWYaHQ4/VZ2hDKFcK-I/AAAAAAAABGQ/vI7D6ZtyyEI/s1600/JulyBlock1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="376" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PPl1KWYaHQ4/VZ2hDKFcK-I/AAAAAAAABGQ/vI7D6ZtyyEI/s400/JulyBlock1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
While considering whether or not to put the fabric away after finishing my blocks or just letting it sit in the middle of my sewing room I couldn't help but note that these colors would make a great boy quilt... And boy colors are tough to pick! So I selected <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2013/06/finished-scrappy-summer-and-pattern.html">cluck cluck sews Scrappy Summer pattern</a> which I've admired since Alison blogged about it and whipped up a bunch of these blocks in no time! I'm developing a bit of a habit with these do.Good Stitches blocks and color palettes. I did the same thing for <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/05/hourglass-crib-quilt.html">May's do.Good Stitches blocks</a> which were done in red, blue and navy also great masculine colors. Trying new things is one of the fun things about being a part of do.Good Stitches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h_I7T1Mo9HE/VZ2fV8DEo1I/AAAAAAAABFo/aIgjf270EXU/s1600/Block1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h_I7T1Mo9HE/VZ2fV8DEo1I/AAAAAAAABFo/aIgjf270EXU/s200/Block1.jpg" width="200" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uCTICKOrwqI/VZ2fVwB2YOI/AAAAAAAABFw/4hkPh8ze6pg/s1600/Block2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uCTICKOrwqI/VZ2fVwB2YOI/AAAAAAAABFw/4hkPh8ze6pg/s200/Block2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Scrappy Summer patter is such a wonderful pattern! It goes together very quickly and works great for scraps. I used Kona White to make the four-patch blocks which are all strip pieced. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--2riYFduhno/VZ2flFDSK6I/AAAAAAAABGA/WG7Y6VBXazI/s1600/QuiltTopMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="346" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--2riYFduhno/VZ2flFDSK6I/AAAAAAAABGA/WG7Y6VBXazI/s400/QuiltTopMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I assembled 30 blocks and arranged them in a crib size quilt measuring about 40x48 over the weekend. Next up is backing and binding additions. I've been hanging onto these little jellyfish guys for just the right boy quilt... not sure if this is the one or not! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xv8vtTpCGFE/VZ2fV8lOBNI/AAAAAAAABFs/ussPM5TFfyY/s1600/BackingOptionsMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xv8vtTpCGFE/VZ2fV8lOBNI/AAAAAAAABFs/ussPM5TFfyY/s400/BackingOptionsMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
And these too - running low on blues again I see! Not sure when when I'll be back to finish this quilt as my son in finishing up his Marines training and we'll be off to see him before he heads off to California to his next duty station. <br />
<br />

Grainline Tiny Pocket TankWhen I saw this pretty rose fabric by Gertie I knew that I had to make something ultra summery. The tiny pocket tank by Grainline Patterns seemed like a great fit!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zlZ7__sTGJo/VZahp_rtUDI/AAAAAAAABEs/8sS2aF4XncA/s1600/PocketTankFront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zlZ7__sTGJo/VZahp_rtUDI/AAAAAAAABEs/8sS2aF4XncA/s400/PocketTankFront.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The 100% cotton swiss dot fabric was very easy to work with. Gerties pretty fabrics are carried at JoAnns. After my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/06/sew-what-staple-dress.html">first attempt sewing a garment with polyester</a> I think the cotton was a wise choice. It was very familiar and 'acted' in ways that I expected it to. I opted for french seams on this top which really made it feel 'put together.'<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NllKZGauWtc/VZah4u2xZUI/AAAAAAAABFI/GW18A3DD5h4/s1600/SideFrenchSeams.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NllKZGauWtc/VZah4u2xZUI/AAAAAAAABFI/GW18A3DD5h4/s400/SideFrenchSeams.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern has two parts (front and back) plus a tiny pocket, which I did not make as I think it would have gotten lost in the busy fabric pattern. Great for beginners! I sewed up a size 4 which aligned well with my measurements. The bust dart and shaped hemline add a little sophistication to the simply top. As you can probably already see the tank is just a smidge tight in the armpit which attributed to some pulling and creasing across the chest area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d6cpk3F6TSg/VZah31AeU-I/AAAAAAAABFE/onV9aSoC99s/s1600/OtherSide.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d6cpk3F6TSg/VZah31AeU-I/AAAAAAAABFE/onV9aSoC99s/s400/OtherSide.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<span id="goog_2073685027"></span><span id="goog_2073685028"></span>Don't mind the tiny tomato I'm holding - it was the very first out of our <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/06/pillows-and-patio-gardens.html">patio garden</a>! I saw it when my hubby and I headed out for photos and I was drawn to pick it immediately... Nope, I couldn't wait five minutes to take the photos first.<br />
<br />
Sooo, the wonky chest, armpit thing... I read a number of suggestions to address this issue (it appears to be a common issue for this pattern) and many said just to size up. That's the easiest thing to do for sure. Thing is I like where the neckline and hemline fall and it is perfectly wide enough. If I simply size up all of those things will change. I believe this means I'll be needing to do an alteration or two. I don't think I'll be able to salvage this top as the seam allowances were fairly small. I will probably still wear it because it isn't awful, the busy print of the fabric saved me there. This garment sewing business is tricky, tricky, tricky!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DfpWe3ZyuxU/VZah306OMrI/AAAAAAAABE8/mmT8UMDuLMs/s1600/Front2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DfpWe3ZyuxU/VZah306OMrI/AAAAAAAABE8/mmT8UMDuLMs/s400/Front2.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
If you experienced this issue, what did you do to fix it? <br />

It has been quite a while since I used a lot of white in a <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/p/finished-quilts.html">quilt</a> so it was fun to revisit something familiar. This quilt was featured on <a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/2015/07/fabric-tuesday.html">Quilt Story</a>!<br />

<br />
I pulled out all of the green and blue fabrics from the bundle leaving just shades of pink, purple and yellow. The blues ended up in a <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/06/pillows-and-patio-gardens.html">herringbone pillow</a>, the greens are just orphaned to the scrap bin for now.<br />
<br />

<br />
The backing is pieced in purple and yellow - I was a little nervous that I wouldn't like how it turned out but I'm really happy with it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L839ZacldoQ/VZKJOwEduLI/AAAAAAAABDg/C4pQbCTVuOk/s1600/BackingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L839ZacldoQ/VZKJOwEduLI/AAAAAAAABDg/C4pQbCTVuOk/s400/BackingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I especially love the chevron pattern on the back left by the quilting! I followed every row on either side of the seam using my walking foot. I used white thread since I was using a big dash of Kona White in this baby quilt. I used just under one yard of white for this quilt which measures 36x38.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0lS8f-EvJU0/VZKJVDxtulI/AAAAAAAABDw/ttntRiEmScg/s1600/QuiltingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0lS8f-EvJU0/VZKJVDxtulI/AAAAAAAABDw/ttntRiEmScg/s400/QuiltingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
When making my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/10/bloggers-quilt-festival-herringbone.html">rainbow herringbone quilt</a> last year I worried that it would be difficult to line up the seams but it is actually a very forgiving pattern. You can grab a link to the herringbone tutorial on my <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/dulinh/tutorials/">pinterest tutorials board</a>. I modified it some but the instructions are really good. My cut pieces were 2.5 x 9 which makes this a jelly roll friendly pattern too! I did have a little trouble with the rows not lining up this time around - there is a good dash of 'eye-balling' that goes into this quilt when piecing the rows. At first I thought my seam allowances were off but it ended up that my eye-balling was the issue. I must have had beginners luck when doing the pattern the first time because I didn't experience this issue the first go around. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fxAHoajhGgQ/VZKJKNwl98I/AAAAAAAABDQ/WU2_f5x6s4w/s1600/BindingFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fxAHoajhGgQ/VZKJKNwl98I/AAAAAAAABDQ/WU2_f5x6s4w/s400/BindingFrontMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'd love to say this is the final installment of my fat eighth bundle but I have a huge pile of scraps so I'm not quite finished with these fabrics. I've used them so much I might just add them to my overflowing scrap bins.<br />

My. Goodness. I was ridiculously happy to see that someone had selected my blog to participate in One Lovely Blog Award, thanks Amanda! The rules are as follows<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="193" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/536/18668359946_d8604aa2ab_m.jpg" width="200" /></div>
<br />
1) Share a little bit about the person (or people) who nominated you.<br />
<br />
Amanda has some seriously cute things going on over at her blog, <a href="http://www.thecozypumpkin.com/2015/06/one-lovely-blog-award.html">The Cozy Pumpkin</a>. I don’t have any littles but if I did I’d be checking out her blog for adorable hand-made clothes. Instead I’m interested in her quilty awesomeness and amazing hand-stitching skills. One of my favorite Cozy Pumpkin quilts is one that she made for her daughters room, a <a href="http://www.thecozypumpkin.com/2014/09/a-quilt-for-my-daughter.html">giant tumbler quilt</a> with free motion stippling, yum! The colors drew me in right away but that quilt has some beautiful crinkliness that I can't get enough of! She has a lot of tips and tutes too!<br />
<br />
2) Share seven things about yourself your readers may not know.<br />
<br />
1. I've only been quilting about 5 years although I had dabbled before. I attempted my first quilt in college, bought a sewing machine, fabric and set out to complete a king size pinwheel quilt with very small pinwheels (I needed about a thousand or two)... still working on that one!<br />
<br />
2. I have quilted all of my own quilts. I recognized right away that I couldn't afford to take my quilts to a long-armer. When I first started I just made quilt tops and folded them up and put them in the closet (good idea right?!). After a small pile amassed I bought a plastic free motion foot for my little Wal-Mart sewing machine. I finished one quilt with the little foot and started a second. Unfortunately the machine and foot exploded into a dozen parts! This is the story of how I came to purchase my Pfaff 4.2 Quilt Expressions machine which has been a workhorse and improved my piecing and quilting dramatically. It has made sewing and quilting so much more fun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/02/free-motion-quilting.html"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iqoZbHMbhYw/VONIzkLPDjI/AAAAAAAAA0E/nL1s9ykmT08/s320/FMQ1MPQ.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
3. I probably spend more time researching ideas for quilts than actually making quilts! Anyone else have this problem?! I'm a regular pinterest, instagram, flickr, blog stalker... and boy does that keep you busy!<br />
<br />
4. Proud mama time! My son is a US Marine and currently stationed in Pensacola, Florida. He's studying to be an air traffic controller and is waiting to find out where his next duty station will be! He's hoping for the west coast - he is not a fan of Florida humidity. Wisconsinite through and through.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8ac2Xibtlsc/VYqi9dB4-TI/AAAAAAAABCM/4Jm698klUCo/s1600/EditVersion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8ac2Xibtlsc/VYqi9dB4-TI/AAAAAAAABCM/4Jm698klUCo/s320/EditVersion.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
5. Speaking of Florida, my hubby and I met in college while completing our Masters program and were married in Panama City Beach, Florida at sunset. We stayed at a little pink hotel on the beach which was demolished a year or so later and turned into a high rise condo. My hubby put together all of the flowers for the wedding including my bouquet. I bought my wedding dress from ebay for $300. I like to be thrifty like that...<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
6. I've been taking an interest in sewing clothes lately! Not sure what got into me. Over Memorial Day a friend and I got together to sew the <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/06/sew-what-staple-dress.html">Staple Dress</a>. After that I completed the <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/121683723@N05/sets/72157651751743013">Belcarra Blouse</a> in cotton and a self drafted linen circle skirt! There are some cute dress and tank patterns I've been eyeing up for future projects. This has been a new adventure - there is so much to learn, garment photography, reading patterns, tailoring, apparel fabric... The <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/dulinh/sew-what/">Pinterest</a>, instagram and blog research is in full swing!<br />
<br />
7. Randomness. I'm currently watching Lost on Netflix; I was never caught up in it while it was airing. I was missing out. I'm also way hooked on Mad Men; I want to be <i>on</i> Mad Men. I just finished reading Overdressed by Elizabeth Cline, a book about the clothing industry in America. Favorite books include Like Water for Chocolate, The Help and anything by <a href="http://www.jenlancaster.com/#!blog1/c5fz">Jen Lancaster</a>. Some of my favorite movies are Steel Magnolias, Hope Floats, and Drowning Mona. I love watching old movies, especially Carey Grant, James Stewart and Jack Lemmon flicks. Don't even get me started on holiday movies... I have a large stack that must be watched every single year. Every. Single. Year. I listen to a lot of country and classic rock music. I like a craft beer or glass of wine (or two) pretty much every day. Green Bay Packers have my heart always. And I wish I could remember half of the Spanish I learned in high school. Randomness.<br />
<br />
3) Choose bloggers that you wish to nominate for the One Lovely Blog Award and share a bit about them.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://girlwithasewingmachine.wordpress.com/">Girl With a Sewing Machine:</a> Lala sews some amazing clothes for herself and her young daughter. Great photos and the fabric, oh my, the fabric! I love reading about her sewing adventures in Singapore.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://where-is-my.blogspot.com/">Where is My Instruction Manual:</a> Again with the clothes! A theme here? I want to sew everything she has made. Lots of kids sewing too.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://neverjustjennifer.blogspot.com/">Never Just Jennifer: </a>A quilty blog! I've had this <a href="http://neverjustjennifer.blogspot.com/2014/12/peach-rose-and-plum-bee-blocks-finished.html">scrappy baby quilt</a> pinned for half a year. I love the random blocks in the simple and slightly off center setting setting. And then there's the rounded corners to fall in love with! I love Jenn's style and use of color.<br />
<br />
This post has been quite an adventure - hope you enjoy!Heather Graveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15236485985256044909noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174353921235002501.post-67981653079165601222015-06-17T16:03:00.000-05:002015-06-25T07:37:33.369-05:00Pillows and Patio Gardens<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">I’m

<span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 107%;">I still can’t believe it has been over four years since we moved to this area; but what
I really can’t believe is that this is the first year that we’ve had a garden…

year my hubby and I put together a patio garden with pots and containers of little
tomatoes, jalapenos, lettuce, basil and cucumbers! We have gotten a ton of rain and had a few
warm days so everything is really taking off this week. Patio gardens are pretty
simple to start and maintain. We spent half a day shopping for plants and planters
and did the planting in a couple of hours – a weekend project. Now we, and by
we I mean my hubby, just make sure that the pots are watered, no weeding
required! Next year I’m hoping to add some zucchini and full size tomatoes.</span></div>

So much that sometimes I buy too much, way, way too much! When I jumped back into quilting a few years ago I bought an inappropriate amount of fabric; it's normal to buy a couple hundred yards of fabric in a year right?? Right.... I have seriously curtailed my fabric intake this year. The neatly folded fabric has spilled off my shelves into piles on the floor which is not neat at all! In an effort to make a little room I decided to devour a fat eighth bundle of Chez Moi Coquette I bought from the <a href="http://www.fatquartershop.com/">Fat Quarter Shop</a> which has had a birthday or two here. In case you are wondering you can make at least three baby quilts from a single fat eighth bundle! Here is my first finish<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JHZkMpCyBww/VXdhUOjXn9I/AAAAAAAAA-c/GqaOj4AU8F8/s1600/QuiltFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JHZkMpCyBww/VXdhUOjXn9I/AAAAAAAAA-c/GqaOj4AU8F8/s640/QuiltFrontMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
After my recently finished <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/06/postage-stamp-quilt.html">postage stamp quilt</a> with a gazillion tiny squares, a few angles were necessary to keep me straight! This is my first triangle quilt finish. I've dabbled in triangles before with my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/09/orange-you-glad-its-finished.html">triangle pillow </a>but this was the first usable quilt with nothing but triangles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ICREH3SXRO0/VXdhDFYCS1I/AAAAAAAAA-Q/ulXuW0myz_U/s1600/BindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ICREH3SXRO0/VXdhDFYCS1I/AAAAAAAAA-Q/ulXuW0myz_U/s400/BindingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm constantly admiring them and I quickly realized how tricky the triangle points can be. By the time I finished this quilt I decided that pressing all seams open was the best way to save them. I did have a couple of 'point casualties' but there is always a couple!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ap8Tmgl7Prk/VXdhHd-RpWI/AAAAAAAAA-Y/E_Zd7QaS6ms/s1600/PinkThread.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ap8Tmgl7Prk/VXdhHd-RpWI/AAAAAAAAA-Y/E_Zd7QaS6ms/s400/PinkThread.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilting I decided on light pink 50wt Auriful thread following each seam. I really love this design partly because it creates stars all over the front and back<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJd7MtYfWx8/VXdhV6g9DyI/AAAAAAAAA-w/5lJZYXEyz-U/s1600/StarQuiltingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJd7MtYfWx8/VXdhV6g9DyI/AAAAAAAAA-w/5lJZYXEyz-U/s400/StarQuiltingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Pretty, pretty, pretty! This crib quilt measures 36x42. I was also able to create a triangle baby quilt and a herringbone quilt that hasn't quite taken form yet from this fat eighth bundle! Who knew so much fabric was stuffed into those neatly folded bundles?!<br />
<br />

The Staple DressSew.... What?! I made something that wasn't a quilt and I liked it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYRcMENsuRE/VXRjXKq05WI/AAAAAAAAA80/l-8Ed6BnkXg/s1600/Hangingv2MPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYRcMENsuRE/VXRjXKq05WI/AAAAAAAAA80/l-8Ed6BnkXg/s640/Hangingv2MPQ.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I came across Me Made Made 2015 on Instagram while cruising Art Gallery Fabrics and thought, I could do this right?! I bought this amazing voile Indelible Floret Stains in Mulberry by Katarina Roccella and the Staple Dress pattern by April Rhodes. Mustard, mint, teal, pink - yes, please! I read a bunch of reviews of the pattern and quite a few people said that it was a great pattern for beginners and lots of newbies like me had good outcomes. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N17mFJbVmKc/VXRjtkhw3lI/AAAAAAAAA9Y/zZT78r7wzpE/s1600/Voile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N17mFJbVmKc/VXRjtkhw3lI/AAAAAAAAA9Y/zZT78r7wzpE/s400/Voile.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I've never made a piece of clothing before I thought maybe I should practice on something that was a little less expensive. I bought 2.5 yards of pretty pink pin dot on navy fabric from the bargain bin for around $9. I think it is rayon - I know nothing about apparel fabric, nothing! Note to other beginners, rayon is very slippery, a less slippery choice might be better for your first garment. The learning begins! A friend of mine, another newbie sewer, joined me and we dove in thinking we'd be wearing our dresses out for the evening. That did not happen. In a few hours we did manage to trace the pattern, cut our fabric pieces, sew together the shoulders and sew the pockets in. We figured we could probably finish sewing the sides together, sew the neck, arms and waist shirring in a couple more hours. That did not happen. On our next meeting we managed to sew the two main pieces together and the neck. Sewing neck and arm holes are really hard! Seriously. My biggest struggle was pressing this fabric; it just would not crease. Even with lots of pins it was still moving around quite a bit while I was sewing. My neck is a little ruffly on the inside as a result but it looks ok on the outside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oXVGIWEbgIU/VXRjgmMC0-I/AAAAAAAAA9I/6A1L__fT2vc/s1600/NeckholeMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oXVGIWEbgIU/VXRjgmMC0-I/AAAAAAAAA9I/6A1L__fT2vc/s400/NeckholeMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I was determined to fix the ruffle effect for the arm holes. Much research commenced. I decided to add a sheerweight fusible interfacing and recut the arm pieces. Much better! The interfacing allowed the fabric to crease when pressed which made all the difference. Next time I'll be sure to carefully fit the arm and neck pieces too. Sigh. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hTYetkvWjCU/VXRjtUKal1I/AAAAAAAAA9U/7hAJp122qEo/s1600/ArmholeMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hTYetkvWjCU/VXRjtUKal1I/AAAAAAAAA9U/7hAJp122qEo/s400/ArmholeMPQ.jpg" width="345" /></a></div>
<br />
Although a lot of freaking out was done over the waist shirring, it was all for nothing, my Pfaff handled it like a boss. The trickiest part was hand winding the elastic thread on the bobbin. Yes, hand winding the bobbin. And of course I wound it the wrong way the first time. Doh.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5DNvBPbXfFg/VXRjc4ypePI/AAAAAAAAA9A/0uczwNCZ0Xk/s1600/ShirringMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5DNvBPbXfFg/VXRjc4ypePI/AAAAAAAAA9A/0uczwNCZ0Xk/s400/ShirringMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Hemming was last. No freaking out but tons of research for hemming slippery fabrics. Basically, the tinier the hem the better. But I still had the pressing issue and this time I couldn't use interfacing like I did with the arms. I took a chance and just sprayed it down with lots and lots of heavy starch. Worked! Immediately put dress on and demand hubby take photos before it falls apart!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_ZkCRlwRcy4/VXRv_d_DQoI/AAAAAAAAA9k/C-FRTEfJojs/s1600/IMAG0419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_ZkCRlwRcy4/VXRv_d_DQoI/AAAAAAAAA9k/C-FRTEfJojs/s320/IMAG0419.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Whew! I sewed a dress. A dress I could, and did, wear to work. Happy!<br />
<br />

I love these colors in the Up Parasol line by Heather Bailey and used up every last scrap of them finishing this postage stamp quilt. This quilt was featured at <a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/2015/06/fabric-tuesday-friends_16.html">Quilt Story: Fabric Tuesday</a>!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6G3d-mVqlG0/VWuCEB-pVII/AAAAAAAAA78/eBQnZdDLvFA/s1600/FrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6G3d-mVqlG0/VWuCEB-pVII/AAAAAAAAA78/eBQnZdDLvFA/s640/FrontMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I added a bunch of scraps from my stash including Art Gallery Pure Elements solids in coral and light pink and several strips of my Birds and Berries collection plus a couple of others strays that fit in. Since these colors are a little out of my typical jive I ended up selecting a solid minky dot in celadon for the backing. Whenever I am in doubt for the backing I tend to gravitate towards a minky in solid. It seems to go with everything!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GctWvO8y0O4/VWuCDS0R1VI/AAAAAAAAA70/yA6xZ5EV0jc/s1600/CloseUpBackingBindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GctWvO8y0O4/VWuCDS0R1VI/AAAAAAAAA70/yA6xZ5EV0jc/s640/CloseUpBackingBindingMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I liked the solid minky color against all the small squares - there was so much going on that a solid color worked well here. I went ahead with a solid light pink by Art Gallery for the binding after doing a couple 'binding auditions' on <a href="https://instagram.com/modernpartiquilts/">instagram</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eecTU4MLlQA/VWuCNtiZ3tI/AAAAAAAAA8M/ZQPOrUBu0bo/s1600/QuiltingBindingCloseUpMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eecTU4MLlQA/VWuCNtiZ3tI/AAAAAAAAA8M/ZQPOrUBu0bo/s640/QuiltingBindingCloseUpMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I kept it really simple with the quilting here; using light teal thread in alternating directions on every other 'stamp.' I really like the diamond look that it leaves on the backing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nrVHa9Zz4wY/VWuCRv4JLLI/AAAAAAAAA8U/4-RBxneYMqY/s1600/QuiltingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="526" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nrVHa9Zz4wY/VWuCRv4JLLI/AAAAAAAAA8U/4-RBxneYMqY/s640/QuiltingMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I was really wishing that I had some of the Up Parasol plaid for the binding... probably going to need to stash some of that!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ph2KMVtjd44/VWuCSMQdDzI/AAAAAAAAA8Y/1A9pcng8cz8/s1600/RollUpMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ph2KMVtjd44/VWuCSMQdDzI/AAAAAAAAA8Y/1A9pcng8cz8/s640/RollUpMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This quilt was made up of 9 patch blocks created with 2.5 inch unfinished squares. 9 patch blocks measured 6.5 inches when completed and the total quilt size is 43x48. This quilt coordinates with the <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/05/postage-stamp-pillow.html">postage stamp pillow</a> I created last week. Usually I do the pillow as a bonus project but this time I wanted to see if it was feasible with my patience level to actually finish an entire quilt using 2.5 inch squares. Turns out it was, but I've moved on to some nice equilateral triangles for my next project!<br />

I decided to put together some 9 patch blocks just to see how it went - I thought I might be in for weeks of sewing tiny squares together but I managed to put all the little blocks together in a weekend. Usually I sew my quilts together in rows so first sewing these into nine patch blocks was a first and a very good idea for these little squares. My test project was this postage stamp pillow cover<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5dRyYGx9hMg/VWW6Bhc1FVI/AAAAAAAAA7A/jSrh3DIBgxI/s1600/FullFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5dRyYGx9hMg/VWW6Bhc1FVI/AAAAAAAAA7A/jSrh3DIBgxI/s640/FullFrontMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Usually I make a pillow with leftovers from a quilt... I guess I still wasn't quite ready to commit to a full quilt made with just 2.5 inch squares. Finished squares are 2 inches. This pillow was made with nine- 9 patch blocks and fits an 18 inch pillow. I was able to strip piece many of the leftovers which allowed for some quick block making. So. Much. Ironing! Thankfully I don't mind ironing...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qCjJlIHT8kU/VWW6HzzMG-I/AAAAAAAAA7Y/2_3s-oMwr6U/s1600/Quilting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qCjJlIHT8kU/VWW6HzzMG-I/AAAAAAAAA7Y/2_3s-oMwr6U/s400/Quilting.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I went with straight line quilting around each seam... and decided that I was not going to be doing that for a large quilt even though I love the look. It took quite some time just for the pillow top. After lots of hmming and hawing I went with Tangerine Leaf from Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander for the backing fabric. I really love this line and especially this print; I have it in every color... although I'm mostly hoarding it! Why is it so hard to part with the prettiest fabrics?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P0xfznVlopc/VWW6C8W5uhI/AAAAAAAAA7M/pTb001DGBa8/s1600/BackingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P0xfznVlopc/VWW6C8W5uhI/AAAAAAAAA7M/pTb001DGBa8/s400/BackingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I wasn't sure if this fabric was appropriate for a backing and I don't think I would use it for the back of a quilt but it works well with the pillow. Plus the leaves fit right in with the birds and flowers from the Up Parasol line used on the front. And of course an invisible zipper in cream!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fR5NOw9WgQI/VWW6KGT5aBI/AAAAAAAAA7g/egu8WjhQTjE/s1600/ZipperPullMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fR5NOw9WgQI/VWW6KGT5aBI/AAAAAAAAA7g/egu8WjhQTjE/s640/ZipperPullMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I am ridiculously happy with that photo of the zipper!<br />

I know I'm not the only one who finds it tricky to use jelly rolls but they keep me on my toes that's for sure! I had a bunch of leftover strips from when I made my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/04/wonky-rainbow-burst-mini-quilt.html">rainbow burst mini quilt</a> from a jelly roll of Up Parasol by Heather Bailey. I love the large scale prints in this line but it's hard to showcase them when they've been cut into 2.5 inch strips.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fVNjWWNQYKU/VVKgDrc97VI/AAAAAAAAA6Y/vxwjEugFuJU/s1600/FrontOutsideMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="521" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fVNjWWNQYKU/VVKgDrc97VI/AAAAAAAAA6Y/vxwjEugFuJU/s640/FrontOutsideMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I added in some odds and ends from the Birds and Berries collection by Jessi and Lauren Jung. These two bird loving fabric lines went together just perfectly! The sweet oranges, pinks, greens and teals meshed so well! I could not help but think of sherbet ice cream the entire time I was working on this quilt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m8IlSlJGyAo/VVKf1PwJT0I/AAAAAAAAA58/LWk4hduns54/s1600/CloseUpBirdsMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m8IlSlJGyAo/VVKf1PwJT0I/AAAAAAAAA58/LWk4hduns54/s400/CloseUpBirdsMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
With my deep affection for teal and orange fabrics it's no wonder that I drawn to the two of these collections. I'm so glad I was able to pull them together into one baby quilt! And use up part of my jelly roll.... although I still have a bunch of strips leftover so more jelly roll pondering in my future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSIz5yMYN4c/VVKgDi9O4cI/AAAAAAAAA6U/rdeI3iVXf30/s1600/RollUpMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSIz5yMYN4c/VVKgDi9O4cI/AAAAAAAAA6U/rdeI3iVXf30/s400/RollUpMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't wash it but I can imagine it with all its crinkly quilty goodness. That pop of hot pink gets me every time! And darn it, I do love plaid, I was just telling my hubby that I need more good plaid in my life... err, stash. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fKCRRwfygIs/VVKf1lCoQ-I/AAAAAAAAA6A/d8x6dbdZkrA/s1600/BirdCloseUpMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fKCRRwfygIs/VVKf1lCoQ-I/AAAAAAAAA6A/d8x6dbdZkrA/s400/BirdCloseUpMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
With all of the busy prints in this quilt I chose a solid binding from Art Gallery Elements. The backing is by Kate Spain's Joy collection in Mint - although it was part of a holiday collection, it goes perfectly with this spring baby quilt! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5U492dNBMqs/VVKfyY9FsXI/AAAAAAAAA50/qZ2gria2DJg/s1600/BackingBindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5U492dNBMqs/VVKfyY9FsXI/AAAAAAAAA50/qZ2gria2DJg/s400/BackingBindingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I've been a meandering machine lately and again did a meandering quilting pattern. I'm still perfecting my meandering - the pattern is so quick and universal that I just want to do it over and over!! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BIELSYG_BPQ/VVKf-JiPmUI/AAAAAAAAA6M/1J0KvLxNDFM/s1600/FrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BIELSYG_BPQ/VVKf-JiPmUI/AAAAAAAAA6M/1J0KvLxNDFM/s400/FrontMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you are wanting to make your own jelly roll squares quilt the center squares are 2.5 inches, followed by 6.5 strips and then 10.5 strips. It does require 'squaring up' after each square is complete. This baby quilt measures 40x40 and goes together super fast!<br />
<br />
<h2 style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-stretch: normal; margin: 0px; position: relative;">

<br /></div>

Can you believe I have never made hourglass blocks before! I'm loving this online quilting bee and learning so much! I had so much fun making these blocks that I didn't want to stop and made an entire crib quilt top in the bat of an eye!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8URHO9Vw4MQ/VUys_XnvkSI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/7fQ6vYUYYeU/s1600/FrontQuiltTopMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8URHO9Vw4MQ/VUys_XnvkSI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/7fQ6vYUYYeU/s400/FrontQuiltTopMPQ.jpg" width="347" /></a></div>
<br />
I had so much fun doing the hourglass blocks that I hardly used any solid blocks but did include a few to shake things up a little. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gkQVp9sSNUY/VUys2a7bCfI/AAAAAAAAA5I/o5iLf85RYSs/s1600/CloseUpMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gkQVp9sSNUY/VUys2a7bCfI/AAAAAAAAA5I/o5iLf85RYSs/s400/CloseUpMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I had very little yardage available for this quilt as these colors aren't my typical 'thing.' I tried adding some sky blue but that was a major fail! I actually ended up buying a handful of fat quarters from my lqs to round this quilt out including the cute animal print from Alexander Henry above. The navy colored Kona is Windsor, my favorite shade of navy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pHnVCLLVoMs/VUyszoCZvwI/AAAAAAAAA48/jKKk9IMqdpw/s1600/BindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="397" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pHnVCLLVoMs/VUyszoCZvwI/AAAAAAAAA48/jKKk9IMqdpw/s400/BindingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I chose a polka dot binding - big surprise I know! But it really was the perfect thing here... isn't it always though?! The backing is white minky dot. I quilted the hourglass diagonals and ended up with a cute diamond pattern on the back. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B7Avwxnz6Rk/VUys2NRo-MI/AAAAAAAAA5E/7LW0XmE2yVk/s1600/BackingHangintMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="395" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B7Avwxnz6Rk/VUys2NRo-MI/AAAAAAAAA5E/7LW0XmE2yVk/s400/BackingHangintMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I finished this quilt just in time to capture a couple of pictures of our tree flowering in the backyard. Usually they bloom, it rains and they're gone. These little flowers smell so amazing... like summer<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YsRZqHoTw4E/VUys_MaopzI/AAAAAAAAA5U/5TyJv9ciIGk/s1600/FrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YsRZqHoTw4E/VUys_MaopzI/AAAAAAAAA5U/5TyJv9ciIGk/s640/FrontMPQ.jpg" width="614" /></a></div>
<br />
Our blocks were a little bit larger than the Cloud 9 pattern. We used 6.5 inch squares for the solid squares and started with 7.5 inch squares for our hourglass blocks. I love the method of making hourglass blocks in the pattern - nearly perfect centers each time - I didn't need to pin at all which I also loved! I sorta want to keep making these blocks over and over; I'm not quite tired of them yet! This quilt measures 36x47 after washing.<br />

This quilt was featured at <a href="http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.com/2015/05/needle-and-thread-thursday-time.html">My Quilt Infatuation Needle and Thread Thursday</a>!!<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Do you see the green grass up there - spring is really, really here, finally! My month to be the quilter was <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/02/promise-circle-february-blocks.html">February</a>; I selected improv log cabins in hot pink, navy, teal, white, mustard and mint. I'm thinking I may need to do another quilt in these colors soon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HngELNyeFw0/VUPicQn3IqI/AAAAAAAAA30/Xoj_jmiq4KI/s1600/ColorFan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HngELNyeFw0/VUPicQn3IqI/AAAAAAAAA30/Xoj_jmiq4KI/s1600/ColorFan.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I love doing improv log cabins; sometimes randomness is just the thing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5jkTE3SzAgk/VMl1PQxc73I/AAAAAAAAAxY/TewXbMfup4k/s1600/BothBlocksMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="361" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5jkTE3SzAgk/VMl1PQxc73I/AAAAAAAAAxY/TewXbMfup4k/s1600/BothBlocksMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It was such fun to see the different fabrics and variations of the block from the rest of the Circle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--tJVc_qGJJQ/VUPhuxa3QkI/AAAAAAAAA3s/oKrMGyiWRMc/s1600/CloseUp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--tJVc_qGJJQ/VUPhuxa3QkI/AAAAAAAAA3s/oKrMGyiWRMc/s1600/CloseUp.jpg" width="376" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted in a meandering pattern, my practicing has been paying off! For the binding I selected a textured solid in mustard from Andover, I think the actual color is called Hay Stack which is fitting.<br />

<br />
<br />
I pieced a backing from solid mint and hot pink flowers with tiny lime colored centers, all from my stash. It feels so good to finish a quilt without buying anything! Just another one of the good things about do.Good Stitches - stash management.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The blocks were 12.5 inches unfinished, some contained one large log cabin and some made up of four small log cabins. The finished quilt measures around 50x68. do.Good Stitches is an online charity quilting bee; this finished quilt will be heading to <a href="http://enchantedmakeovers.org/">Enchanted Makeovers</a>. One more indoors shot - these bright colors were tough to capture... probably needed to push more buttons on my camera... which ones though?!?<br />

I'm here and sewing... although sewing lots of things that I've already shared here before. I am finally caught up with custom order requests and even managed to squeak in a Caribbean vacation this month with the hubby. Back in December I mentioned joining a <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/12/first-timer.html">rainbow mini quilt swap</a> on Instagram. It was my first swap and so much fun! This quilt was featured at <a href="http://blog.richardandtanyaquilts.com/2015/05/link-finish-friday-167.html">Richard and Tanya Quilts</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2A7Drxa6Dso/VT98Y5DqDXI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/LbyzWALGUcY/s1600/HangingFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2A7Drxa6Dso/VT98Y5DqDXI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/LbyzWALGUcY/s1600/HangingFrontMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I made this mini quilt over winter break. My partner mentioned that she liked Heather Bailey and low volume fabrics. I had a jelly roll of Up Parasol by Heather Bailey and a bunch of prints from my stash that played really well together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R_1eyI0JwWQ/VT99FmZSMqI/AAAAAAAAA2k/9UR0x_70AWU/s1600/FabricStackMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R_1eyI0JwWQ/VT99FmZSMqI/AAAAAAAAA2k/9UR0x_70AWU/s1600/FabricStackMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Thankfully my partner also likes wonky and since I've been head over heels in love with <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/11/wonky-work-in-progress.html">Greenleaf Goods wonky pinwheel tutorial</a> for awhile it was a chance to try the pattern on a mini scale and a fresh layout similar to Wavelengths by Lee at Freshly Pieced. If anyone is wanting to see detailed construction on this mini let me know I'd be happy to put a tutorial!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2hZsOT7z1Ks/VT99FmYoGjI/AAAAAAAAA2g/oI0JM5v18-A/s1600/UnquiltedTopMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2hZsOT7z1Ks/VT99FmYoGjI/AAAAAAAAA2g/oI0JM5v18-A/s1600/UnquiltedTopMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Capturing the rainbow was the trickiest part of the mini but this layout finally won me over! I had the perfect backing for a quilting enthusiast. The swap required a label, which is something I never do, but it does make it special doesn't it?! Plus I got to use my 'fancy stitches' on my Pfaff to attach the label, something I almost never get to do while quilting. I should make more labels I think...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3mZHKkn42cU/VT99EwMefpI/AAAAAAAAA2Y/P_ytZB8vXmI/s1600/BackingInProgressMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3mZHKkn42cU/VT99EwMefpI/AAAAAAAAA2Y/P_ytZB8vXmI/s1600/BackingInProgressMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted the mini in one big concentric circle. I started at the teal center and did a free motion circle until I reached the edge of the quilt and then I switched over to my regular walking foot to quilt the rest, restarting at the end of each arch. I changed thread colors with the rainbow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a5xmhsVTLUQ/VUIgYa9aiFI/AAAAAAAAA3A/gOjg_Dbfgm8/s1600/RainbowThreadsQuiltingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a5xmhsVTLUQ/VUIgYa9aiFI/AAAAAAAAA3A/gOjg_Dbfgm8/s1600/RainbowThreadsQuiltingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
On the theme of rainbows I added a rainbow binding too<br />
<br />

<br />
I sent my mini to Australia several weeks ago and recently received my swap package; head on over to <a href="http://instagram.com/modernpartiquilts/">instagram</a> to check out the amazing mini package I received! Can't wait to join a new swap now that I'm finally caught up with almost everything.... except blogging!<br />

Each month we make quilt blocks and bring them to our meeting where a winner is chosen randomly. The winner gets to take all of the blocks home to make something amazing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cktiz17RmKw/VSKJjtNe2KI/AAAAAAAAA04/A5zvHBQCbuU/s1600/FrontPurplePinwheelMPQv2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cktiz17RmKw/VSKJjtNe2KI/AAAAAAAAA04/A5zvHBQCbuU/s1600/FrontPurplePinwheelMPQv2.jpg" height="352" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
January colors were shades of purple with a little bit of pink thrown in. There were two pinwheel block variations which added a fun little twist. We did a modern pinwheel<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_1ck5u1GIlo/VSKKK0hRWMI/AAAAAAAAA1A/sOCCzHp-NV0/s1600/WheelsMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_1ck5u1GIlo/VSKKK0hRWMI/AAAAAAAAA1A/sOCCzHp-NV0/s1600/WheelsMPQ.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
and traditional pinwheel<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FtAHqSCkJoY/VSKKO3pwdWI/AAAAAAAAA1I/aiNl4jUzdXw/s1600/PinwheelBlocksMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FtAHqSCkJoY/VSKKO3pwdWI/AAAAAAAAA1I/aiNl4jUzdXw/s1600/PinwheelBlocksMPQ.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The blocks were fairly large and there were a good 20 or so. The simple thing to do would have been to just put them together but I wasn't feeling that... and I wasn't planning on a great big quilt. I decided to deconstruct the traditional pinwheels by trimming them from 11.5 inch blocks to 6 inch blocks. With the extra fabrics I put together 6 inch improv blocks and then laid them out haphazardly with the larger modern pinwheels. One of my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/01/welcome-2015.html">goals this year</a> was to make a quilt with differently sized blocks; this was just the ticket!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I3RPSorLdNc/VSKLyI_rnBI/AAAAAAAAA1U/vuK5Bqcv-uk/s1600/PartialFront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I3RPSorLdNc/VSKLyI_rnBI/AAAAAAAAA1U/vuK5Bqcv-uk/s1600/PartialFront.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved that this project forced me to do things I wouldn't normally think of!! Like use purple for instance, like a lot of purple! I decided early on that this quilt was going into my own collection. Since our living room is yellow with purple accents this was going to need a little bit of yellow... with my massive mustard crush lately my selected shade of yellow can't be much of a surprise!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b5B91p8Awws/VSL5JNXVulI/AAAAAAAAA1s/leYz48EoJXY/s1600/BackingSnailsMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b5B91p8Awws/VSL5JNXVulI/AAAAAAAAA1s/leYz48EoJXY/s1600/BackingSnailsMPQ.jpg" height="302" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I managed to get snails, mushrooms, flowers and birds into the backing! A pieced backing of course!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f7ycfVYIPpM/VSL5EuwOLrI/AAAAAAAAA1k/uKHrtjdJ4JI/s1600/Backing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f7ycfVYIPpM/VSL5EuwOLrI/AAAAAAAAA1k/uKHrtjdJ4JI/s1600/Backing.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilting was done with my walking foot in a random wavy pattern in light orchid aurifil thread. It took quilt awhile to do but I do love how it looks in the end. Can't wait to see what it looks like all washed and crinkly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDi7iALzhtE/VSL5JOo3WAI/AAAAAAAAA1w/X4nAHvZJu-Y/s1600/BackingBirds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDi7iALzhtE/VSL5JOo3WAI/AAAAAAAAA1w/X4nAHvZJu-Y/s1600/BackingBirds.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It didn't seem right to leave the front a mustard free zone so I selected a mustard colored thread to attach the solid purple binding! Just right!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--2CB7vMX-oc/VSL5KL9gw1I/AAAAAAAAA18/GCK2vvzDTGc/s1600/Binding.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--2CB7vMX-oc/VSL5KL9gw1I/AAAAAAAAA18/GCK2vvzDTGc/s1600/Binding.jpg" height="311" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This finished out to be a small lap size quilt, around 40x45. I'm planning to take it to our next guild meeting later this week and then we can use it!<br />
<br />
<h2 style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; margin: 0px; position: relative;">

Members can take home blocks to be pieced, quilt tops to be quilted, and/or quilts to be bound. The finished quilts will be donated to a local charity. I'm in need of some serious free motion quilting practice so I chose a quilt top that needed quilting.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l3Iy2pHQ7aQ/VONI4kwhJ2I/AAAAAAAAA0Q/8ffGsbs4QZM/s1600/PaisleyMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l3Iy2pHQ7aQ/VONI4kwhJ2I/AAAAAAAAA0Q/8ffGsbs4QZM/s1600/PaisleyMPQ.jpg" height="330" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This charity quilt is made up of 15 large squares in different shades of grey with pops of bright colors. I selected an Aurifil thread in a very light blue/grey which goes well with all of the blocks. I'm planning to quilt it using motifs that I've never put on a quilt before. It was just me and Angela Walters Free Motion for Beginners this weekend. So far I have practiced concentric circles (the type that are supposed to touch), pebbles, flowers, loopys, and paisleys. I have to say that some of these seem to look much better in photos than in person! So far the most difficult for me is the paisley. My thread kept breaking on this fmq design, likely because of my inconsistent speed and/or wild changing of direction while quilting. It's also easy to get trapped in a place that you can't get out of with this pattern. I ended up missing a few big areas and had to go back fill in later too. That said, I can see using this in small spaces again because it does look pretty good.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started with the pebbles in one of the wonky star blocks. Pebbles take forever! I can't imagine doing pebbles in that scale all over on a large quilt - if I decide to do that on an entire quilt its going to be stones or large rocks for me! On the plus side they look good and were pretty easy to do for a beginner. The one motif that I really want to perfect is the concentric circle. For me it isn't easy to get those circles to touch... and I never quite get close enough to the edge so I have big gaps that I end up filling in later... and usually in a strange way. I also have several enormous circles... how'd that happen?! I'm thinking each row will need a few circles because I'd like to add that to my list of 'go to' free motion quilting patterns.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iqoZbHMbhYw/VONIzkLPDjI/AAAAAAAAA0A/CRMhHSm0XEA/s1600/FMQ1MPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iqoZbHMbhYw/VONIzkLPDjI/AAAAAAAAA0A/CRMhHSm0XEA/s1600/FMQ1MPQ.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think I perfected the flower pattern. I could see using this design on a large quilt. It's easily the most fun pattern so far. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3HhKYsJme6M/VONIwBzn9EI/AAAAAAAAAzw/IgqKXHgddjE/s1600/FlowersMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3HhKYsJme6M/VONIwBzn9EI/AAAAAAAAAzw/IgqKXHgddjE/s1600/FlowersMPQ.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And the current 'easiest' free motion quilting pattern so far is loopys. I've seen this fmq pattern on many full size quilts and wanted to use it for awhile but never had just the right quilt top for it. I would use this pattern again, its quick and effective. I imagine it will be even better once its washed and crinkly. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uWI_GzjNZkQ/VONI1oPivMI/AAAAAAAAA0I/cUo_y6pgMUs/s1600/LoopysMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uWI_GzjNZkQ/VONI1oPivMI/AAAAAAAAA0I/cUo_y6pgMUs/s1600/LoopysMPQ.jpg" height="282" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have eight blocks finished so far. One of the things I noticed after an afternoon of quilting my muscles started to fatigue, once that happened most of my control went out the window... my lines were shaky, I couldn't stay within the boundaries, round things were square, square things were round, you get the idea... even though I had more energy mentally, my muscles were done and I had to take a break. </div>
<div>

It would be okay with me if she just did that line over and over… The fabrics are so bright and colorful. I used it on my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/10/bloggers-quilt-festival-herringbone.html">rainbow herringbone quilt</a> and <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/12/first-timer.html">rainbow quilted pillow cover</a> last year. I came across a bunch of Simply Color fabrics just before the New Year and bought them up! The first item to be made from my coveted stash is this rainbow mini quilt, a special request from a client who needed a ‘star of the show’ for her mini quilt wall! This mini quilt was featured at <a href="http://blog.richardandtanyaquilts.com/2015/02/link-finish-friday-156.html">Richard and Tanya's Link a Finish Friday</a>!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T5892USmF2A/VNwsOnQpZ8I/AAAAAAAAAzg/iNSjmRm5dko/s1600/RainbowMiniMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T5892USmF2A/VNwsOnQpZ8I/AAAAAAAAAzg/iNSjmRm5dko/s1600/RainbowMiniMPQ.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yum! This mini is a redo of the rainbow pillow cover although this one needed to be a little larger as the pillow was an 18 inch square and the client was needing a 20x20 for her mini quilt wall. The adding of one more row going across and down proved to be a challenge! I did use a few scraps from my stash and a number of fabrics from V and Co Simply Style line which has many of the same colors. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WGXk2p9zMBE/VNwsHNERX1I/AAAAAAAAAzA/CwEMKPU_eRg/s1600/CloseUpMiddleMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WGXk2p9zMBE/VNwsHNERX1I/AAAAAAAAAzA/CwEMKPU_eRg/s1600/CloseUpMiddleMPQ.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I decided on a rainbow binding, although any of the colors probably would have worked out well and if it were for me I would have done teal or mustard… or maybe the plum because it is gorgeous! For me to say that about a purple is really something; I have almost no purple to speak of in my stash, it just isn't something I’m drawn to, but these purples are amazing! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2bzxwpSa6FE/VNwsLwMIt0I/AAAAAAAAAzY/rSZvG0K0480/s1600/PurpleBindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2bzxwpSa6FE/VNwsLwMIt0I/AAAAAAAAAzY/rSZvG0K0480/s1600/PurpleBindingMPQ.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Since I machine stitch my bindings to the front and back – first I stitch the binding to the back and then flip and machine stitch to the front – I had a rough time deciding on the color of thread to use on the front binding with the rainbow colored binding; I didn't want the thread to be overly obvious against some of the fabrics and blend right in with others… I nearly went with white which would have stood out on most but decided on grey at the last minute and was really happy with how it turned out. Last fall I attended <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/09/happy-birthday-to-me-and-friday-finish.html">Madison Quilt Expo</a> and listened to Weeks Ringle speak and recall her saying that if she could only have a few colors of thread she would choose grey, tan and white… and maybe a few others but those are the ones I can remember! Good call on the grey Weeks, good call! <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UU9LhG-IU9A/VNwsIehnqOI/AAAAAAAAAzM/8SNLDW7AcSI/s1600/BackingFullMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UU9LhG-IU9A/VNwsIehnqOI/AAAAAAAAAzM/8SNLDW7AcSI/s1600/BackingFullMPQ.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
My first go hanging a quilt with washi tape; works! Well, just long enough to take photos and then it promptly fell down… that’s ok, I work fast! </div>
<div>
<br />
Just for fun I did a pieced backing with fabrics from the front. I even tried to place them so the straight line quilting would line up same as the front. It was very close. Close enough!</div>

</div>
A few weeks ago I mentioned a <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/01/rainbow-baby-quilt-top.html">rainbow baby quilt top</a> I was working on and I wanted to share the owly finish with you. These cute owls were just the thing to put on the back!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V2xrWJHcHJM/VMwUmDETaDI/AAAAAAAAAyo/CPCBlIvic6w/s1600/BackBindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V2xrWJHcHJM/VMwUmDETaDI/AAAAAAAAAyo/CPCBlIvic6w/s1600/BackBindingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilting on this baby quilt I did more meandering - I have been meandering up a storm lately! Very unlike me... But I'm feeling a little better each time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2DLi4KnU02Q/VMwUkVUBQQI/AAAAAAAAAyY/POkiQl7Gi78/s1600/FrontBackBindNameMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2DLi4KnU02Q/VMwUkVUBQQI/AAAAAAAAAyY/POkiQl7Gi78/s1600/FrontBackBindNameMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I was a little worried about the placement of the applique letters because it seems that no matter how many times you measure and plan ahead, these things have a way of moving.... and I knew I wouldn't discover it until the binding was attached. Not this time; placed the letters just where I wanted them... whew! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OwDh7An6PcE/VMwUpKbaRII/AAAAAAAAAyw/c7ZcrdZeoVw/s1600/FrontQuiltingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="321" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OwDh7An6PcE/VMwUpKbaRII/AAAAAAAAAyw/c7ZcrdZeoVw/s1600/FrontQuiltingMPQ.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilt measures about 31x31. Fabrics were from Moda Good Morning by Me and My Sister Designs (pattern too), Kona White, the teal squiggle is from Jungle Bungle by Tim and Beck and the owls were from Timeless Treasures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JwUXVm-xcsM/VMwUlSiLmTI/AAAAAAAAAyg/nEPEOQyFMlI/s1600/CustomNameMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JwUXVm-xcsM/VMwUlSiLmTI/AAAAAAAAAyg/nEPEOQyFMlI/s1600/CustomNameMPQ.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I appliqued the name using Wonder Under and machine stitching to attach the letters to the border before attaching to the quilt. I have found that machine stitching is necessary even with the Wonder Under for items that are going to be washed a lot. There was a few places that I didn't machine stitch on my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/09/just-another-dog-quilt.html">Mr. P quilt</a> (like the doggie door) and it has started to pull up on the edges that weren't stitched down. Mr. Peanut doesn't mind though...<br />

My month to be the quilter is February which came up really fast! Yay, so glad it’s here already! I wanted to keep it simple since I only had a few days to come up with a color scheme and block. I decided on improv log cabins in two variations. I first dove into improv log cabins when putting together my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-winning-streak.html">pink log cabin pillow</a> – those three little blocks were super fun. Promise Circle quilts benefit orphaned children through <a href="http://www.threadinghope.com/">Threading Hope</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5jkTE3SzAgk/VMl1PQxc73I/AAAAAAAAAxQ/701Zma4QCOw/s1600/BothBlocksMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5jkTE3SzAgk/VMl1PQxc73I/AAAAAAAAAxQ/701Zma4QCOw/s1600/BothBlocksMPQ.jpg" height="362" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I selected colors in hot pink, mustard, white, navy and mint/light teal.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ArEATQR2bfc/VMl1RhId6QI/AAAAAAAAAxg/lq6knOxhP3g/s1600/February2015ColorsMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ArEATQR2bfc/VMl1RhId6QI/AAAAAAAAAxg/lq6knOxhP3g/s1600/February2015ColorsMPQ.jpg" height="383" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/01/welcome-2015.html">2015 goals</a> was to put together a quilt with different sized blocks – making a quilt with several other people seemed like a good opportunity to get at that. The ‘large block variation’ is 12.5x12.5 unfinished. I started with a 3 inch square in the middle and added strings in varying widths between 1 - 2.5 inches with no particular rhyme or reason although I did alternate colors at each turn and kept the logs somewhat straight instead of wonky.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VYPx6ShcqE4/VMl1QZMSVnI/AAAAAAAAAxU/a6bsDaA9YEs/s1600/LargeBlockMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VYPx6ShcqE4/VMl1QZMSVnI/AAAAAAAAAxU/a6bsDaA9YEs/s1600/LargeBlockMPQ.jpg" height="370" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The ‘small block variation’ is made up of 4- 6.5x6.5 unfinished improv log cabin blocks with a total unfinished size of 12.5x12.5 just like the large block. I started with a 2.5 inch square in varying colors and used the same pile of strings for the large block variation using mostly 1 - 1.5 inch wide strings although there were a few that were wider.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZlahJ8A0b_0/VMl1UMOV5sI/AAAAAAAAAxo/MRrYxPDc5vM/s1600/SmallBlock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZlahJ8A0b_0/VMl1UMOV5sI/AAAAAAAAAxo/MRrYxPDc5vM/s1600/SmallBlock.jpg" height="352" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Each bee mate will make 2 blocks. I plan to let my bee mates decide which block variation(s) they want to make. That way it will be a fun surprise to see what shows up! I’ve never made a whole quilt with improv log cabins as it seems daunting but I have always admired them. The finished quilt will be donated to charity and should be ready in April.<br />
<br />
If you are a beginner to improv log cabins take a look at the tutorial by Heather Jones at <a href="http://www.sew4home.com/projects/fabric-art-accents/heather-jones-wonky-block-modern-quilting-project">Sew4Home</a> My blocks are a little more scrappy and had smaller beginning center squares but the general idea for construction is the same. Do what you like bee mates – it’s going to be amazing no matter what!<br />

This cute quilt deserved an amazing photo shoot. I've been eyeing up this place in my neighborhood for some time thinking it would make a great background. I think yes! The lighting was just right, my hubby was holding the quilt in just the right way and mostly following my instructions. This morning's photo shoot - major fail. Glad I got to finish up this Friday on a good note!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dp_YnS6ojto/VMwOL9iptkI/AAAAAAAAAyA/EnYxy375I5U/s1600/SillyStringsFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dp_YnS6ojto/VMwOL9iptkI/AAAAAAAAAyA/EnYxy375I5U/s1600/SillyStringsFrontMPQ.jpg" height="571" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I followed my gut for the binding and went with the teal and white pin dot fabric; in my <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/01/silly-string-quilt-in-progress.html">last post about this quilt </a>I was pondering some other options. It looks so perfect with the backing I have no idea why I was considering something else. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E_LAcOSKQvw/VMwOJ9tIkvI/AAAAAAAAAx4/5jMPuRQs-ig/s1600/BindingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E_LAcOSKQvw/VMwOJ9tIkvI/AAAAAAAAAx4/5jMPuRQs-ig/s1600/BindingMPQ.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
These little polka dot feathers get me every time. The quilt measures 35x41, a perfect size for a crib quilt. I have listed silly strings in my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/220722543">etsy shop</a>. I couldn't be happier with this quilt!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3S15Qf-vfzc/VMgUijEWW5I/AAAAAAAAAw4/jSuIyeweEPA/s1600/CloseUpFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3S15Qf-vfzc/VMgUijEWW5I/AAAAAAAAAw4/jSuIyeweEPA/s1600/CloseUpFrontMPQ.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After a lot of hmming and hawing and moving pieces around I finally decided on a layout. An original design, yay! I shall call it Silly String. Just because.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0S8RS94Z5Es/VMgUh-snwWI/AAAAAAAAAww/tgxVQ-Rj76o/s1600/FullFrontMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0S8RS94Z5Es/VMgUh-snwWI/AAAAAAAAAww/tgxVQ-Rj76o/s1600/FullFrontMPQ.jpg" height="397" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I selected a cute print from Life is Tweet by Stephanie Marrot, for the backing and basted it. These polka dot feathers are so cute! The lime and purple give the quilt a little more color too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DjVXG9AbSvo/VMgUmHypBLI/AAAAAAAAAxA/6RCiupqdMbc/s1600/SelvageMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DjVXG9AbSvo/VMgUmHypBLI/AAAAAAAAAxA/6RCiupqdMbc/s1600/SelvageMPQ.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And then wouldn't ya' know I couldn't make up my mind how to quilt it. At all! I even took to <a href="http://instagram.com/modernpartiquilts">instagram</a> to get some insta-feedback! Still nothing. I've never had a quilt sit and sit just starting at me for days before.... Phht. Last night I had a few minutes and thought darn it, I'm just going to meander this thing and get it off my floor.... I seriously need some meandering practice anyways!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z44z1xVrSdw/VMgUgrA-EfI/AAAAAAAAAwo/_iY_DNptf-s/s1600/CloseUpBackingMPQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z44z1xVrSdw/VMgUgrA-EfI/AAAAAAAAAwo/_iY_DNptf-s/s1600/CloseUpBackingMPQ.jpg" height="317" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Not too bad - hardly any square loops this time! I had purchased a Supreme Slider from Amazon and used it for the first time on this quilt. Wow, I have been missing out - no wonder I had square loops, I haven't been able to move my fabric very well. It's hard to know the difference until you quilt with it and without it. I had initially bought the Supreme Slider for quilting with minky which is a little harder to move than cotton fabric. Hope it works this well for minky too! Maybe I can even tackle the pebble or bubble quilting someone had mentioned!<br />
<br />
Now onto the binding... which I had selected quite awhile ago while I pondered the quilting. I was thinking of a teal with white pin dot - same fabric in the quilt top. Although now seeing the backing with the front I'm wondering if lime or purple might work and bring it all together.... Or if that would just be strange?! I might need to hold an <a href="http://instagram.com/modernpartiquilts">instagram</a> binding audition. <br />

I haven't attended the party before so hope I don't trip going down the steps or something....<br />
<br />
I started my blog late last summer after being a 'blog stalker' for years... I had never even commented on a blog before if you can believe it! I mostly blog about quilts and quilting. After living in Northern Wisconsin all our lives my hubby and I moved to Madison in late 2010 leaving all our friends and family behind. I had been sewing on and off for years but was finding the time to sew a lot! I was spending more time on blogs, pinterist and flickr lurking so I felt it was about time that I join in - and I did! It's great to be able to connect with people who have similar interests. I have learned a ton and have been having a great time getting to know other folks.<br />
<br />
Last year I finished 25 quilts. I'm calling 2014 the year of the dog quilt because 8 of those were dog related! The rest of my 2014 quilty finishes can be seen <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2015/01/welcome-2015.html">here</a>.<br />

Thankfully I like dogs... enough to include a dog reference in my blog name. The parti in Modern Parti Quilts is a nod to our oldest pup Peanut, aka Mr. P, he's a studly parti-colored cocker spaniel. In just a few days he will be having his 11th anniversary with us; we adopted him January 28 in 2004 when he was a young pup who had been found wandering around in the freezing cold.<br />

<br />
One of my favorite accomplishments from 2014 was entering the <a href="http://modernpartiquilts.blogspot.com/2014/10/bloggers-quilt-festival-herringbone.html">Bloggers Quilt Festival</a>. My rainbow herringbone quilt was selected as part of the Viewer's Choice!<br />
